PoE (Power over Ethernet)
What does the term mean
Power supply of IP devices (typically cameras) via Ethernet cable.
PoE enables data and power to be carried over one UTP/FTP cable. In CCTV it is the standard way to power IP cameras without separate adapters.
Practical implications
- Faster installation and fewer points of failure.
- Central power backup (PoE switch + UPS).
- PoE “budget”: planning the performance of the switches is a must (otherwise the cameras will disconnect).
Practical meaning
How PoE (Power over Ethernet) applies to a real service
It makes sense mainly when it results in a specific procedure for an object, an event or a team on site.
When is the term resolved
PoE (Power over Ethernet) is mainly handled in practice when designing a facility, auditing security, handing over security technology, or when dealing with an alarm and incident.
Common mistakes in practice
The most common mistake is to deal with technology in isolation, without a procedure for operation, responsible persons, recording and response in real operation.
What to do in practice
If the term applies to your real operation, it connects to Site security. That is where we deal with the specific space, scope, responsibility and next step before deployment.
